Who Was Barak Longmate?
Barak Longmate had a long career as a genealogist, heraldic engraver, editor and publisher. He published the fifth edition of Collins Peerage in 1779 and a Supplement in 1784. His son Barak Longmate followed him into the profession, and they became known as Barak Longmate the Elder and Barak Longmate the Younger, with the son often signing his work as Barak Longmate junior.
Birth
Barak Longmate was born on 4 July 1738, and christened four days later in St James Piccadilly. His parents were Barak and Elizabeth Longmate of Portland Street, in Westminster London.
In 1752, when he was 14, Barak commenced his apprenticeship with his master, James Wigley, a citizen and clothworker of London, with a bond length of 7 years. Wigley was more commonly known as a printmaker and engraver of trade cards with premises in Poppin’s Court, Fleet-Street, London; an historic street which still exists today. At the end of his apprenticeship, in 1759, Barak was made a freeman of the City of London.
